Experimental quantification of the performance of a horizontal multi-pipe bulk separator of water and oil with crude spiking

Abstract Subsea water separation with pipe separators is crucial for ensuring efficient and environmentally responsible extraction of oil gas from the seabed. In this study, in a process called as “crude spiking,” two concentrations crude (e.g., 185 400 ppm) are added to Exxsol D60 mimic characteristics real mixtures multi-parallel separator. The separator performance water–oil bulk such efficiency, cut ratio, flow pattern at inlet, thickness evolution fluid layers evaluated compared values when operating unspiked D60. Crude spiking significantly reduces efficiency ratio continuous regimes (low cuts) up 49%. Water fractions 90% have highest values; thus, these not affected by spiking.
